History

Tularosa Groves in Tularosa, New Mexico, represents the remarkable success of agricultural innovation from the mid-20th century. During the 1950s, the U.S. undertook experiments to broaden agricultural possibilities, one of which involved cultivating pistachios. Among various varieties tested, the Kerman pistachio from Iran emerged as the most viable, thriving in regions with specific climate and soil conditions. New Mexico, with its ideal environment, produces some of the finest pistachios in the world.

Why New Mexico Pistachios Excel

The Kerman pistachio tree thrives in areas with moderate water needs, climates that allow dormancy without freezing damage, and soil conditions that enhance nut flavor. New Mexico offers an exceptional combination of these factors, resulting in pistachios with a superior taste and quality.

Pistachio Cultivation at Tularosa Groves

Tularosa Groves, established in 1990, began with 1,500 young trees on 40 acres. Over the years, the orchard expanded to 12,000 trees across the 140 acres. The Kerman pistachio trees grow to about 20-25 feet tall and produce clusters of nuts resembling grapes. Each acre typically holds 100-130 trees, with a male-to-female tree ratio of 1:12 to ensure successful pollination.

The Harvesting and Processing Journey

The pistachio harvest occurs in September when the nuts are shaken from the trees. After harvesting, the nuts undergo a meticulous process:

  1. Epicarp Removal: The outer skin is removed.
  2. Drying: The nuts are dried to preserve quality.
  3. Sorting: Nuts are categorized by size, splits, and color.
  4. Roasting and Seasoning: For a ready-to-enjoy product.
